The following two articles I found on google.
A long time icon on the World of Outlaws sprint car series has had to call it quits after twenty plus years with them.
Work’N Woody has been forced to retire after World of Outlaws officials informed its owner/operator Eric Malies that they have decided to go in a different direction and will not renew his contract for next season.
Malies has taken this unfortunate decision well and decided to park Work’N Woody in order to stay at home with his family in Florida and pursue other opportunities.
This marks the end of an era as Work’N Woody has served as the “Official Push Truck and Safety Vehicle” since 1988.
Work’N Woody was built by Eric Mailies’ father Art Malies in 1978 who operated it with his wife Carol from 1978 to 2008.
Before hitting the road with Work’N Woody, Art worked as a carpet and interior specialist as well as an independent insurance agent while his wife Carol worked as a commercial insurance rater. Work’N Woody is based on a 1957 FC150 Willys Jeep pick-up chassis and features power from a 368 c.i. small block Chevy built by Wesmar Racing Engines. From 1978 to 1987 Work’N Woody traveled around Northern California in support on the Northern Auto Racing Club and worked the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Skagit, Washington from 1982-1987. Then in 1988 Work’N Woody became the “Official Push Truck and Safety Vehicle” of the World of Outlaws and put in over one million miles supporting that series. Eric Malies took over for his parents in 2009 and operated Work’N Woody through 2010.
Over the years Work’N Woody became a cornerstone of the World of Outlaws. As a young boy at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt I remember seeing Work’N Woody out there with the sprint cars and really thought it was a cool vehicle. Work’N Woody was a crowd favorite with the kids in the stands and served the World of Outlaws well. The Malies family used their unique creation to serve sprint car racers all over the country for over thirty years.
Barberville, FL — Countless hours and endless dedication goes into making the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series “The Greatest Show on Dirt.” A committed man (Art) traveled to each and every event and put in thousands of hours of work and endless thousands of miles on the road each year to bring the best sprint car racing in the world to fans from coast-to-coast. Art and Carol operated Work’N Woody, the Official Push Truck and Safety vehicle of the series.
Fans from coast-to-coast have grown accustomed to seeing Work’N Woody on the track and working the push lane. When a car needs to be pushed or there is a caution on the track, Work’N Woody is on the scene in mere seconds, always ready to help, and is equipped with full fire and safety equipment.
Piloted by Art and Carol Malies of Deming, New Mexico, Work’N Woody which was originally a 1957 FC150 Willy’s (Cabover) Jeep, has pushed thousands of sprint cars over the years at hundreds of tracks. The 2008 season will mark the 30th overall year that the couple has been involved in sprint car racing and the 21st consecutive year on the road full-time with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
Eric Malies, son of Art and Carol will also join his parents this season for the entire World of Outlaws schedule, beginning with the 37th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida this week. Eric Mailes, who is a retired member of the United States Navy, joined his parents on the road in 2007 and drove Work’N Woody for a majority of the season.
“We are really excited to be a part of the 30th Anniversary season and celebration for the World of Outlaws,” said the Malies as they prepared for the 2008 season.
Work’N Woody is powered by a Wesmar 368 Small Block Chevy, and rides around on Goodyear Wrangler M/T tires. Woody made its debut at West Capital Raceway located in West Sacramento, California, during the tracks final tribute race in 1979. The Malies operated Woody for 10 years on the West Coast mainly in Northern California supporting the Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC), as well as the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway starting in 1982. Since 2002, Work’N Woody has been located in Deming, New Mexico after moving from Carmichael, California.
In 1996, Art & Carol were honored with the Outstanding Contribution to the Sport by the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville, Iowa, and this contribution continues to grow at each and every Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event, thanks to their dedication and hard work, as well as the support of their fine sponsors.
Work’N Woody’s sponsors for the 2008 season include: Speedway Motors, ButlerBuilt, Clean Seal, Redline Oil, Goodyear, JE Pistons, Wesmar Engines, Gaerte Engines, Shaver Racing Engines, J&J Enterprises, Waterman Racing Products, Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, KSE, AFCO Shocks, Outhouse Signs, T-Shirts Unlimited, and Design 500.
